Edith Mae Grimes Davis

March 16, 1939 — November 5, 2025

Houston, Texas

The National Funeral Directors & Morticians Association, Inc. announces the transition of Mrs. Edith Mae Grimes Davis, sister of Association Member, Ed W. Grimes.

The National Funeral Directors & Morticians Association, Inc. sincerely sympathizes with the Grimes-Davis Family. May God continue to watch over you all. We give you this one thought to keep, "Although it's difficult today to see beyond sorrow, may looking back in memory help comfort you tomorrow."

Edith Mae Grimes Davis transitioned from this life on November 5, 2025, at the age of 86. She was born in Silsbee, Texas, to the late Eddie Mae Butler Grimes and James Clayton Grimes, Sr. on March 16, 1939.

Houston became home for Edith in 1957. She worked faithfully for the City of Houston’s Planning and Development Department for more than 25 years until her retirement. Edith loved music and basketball—her passion for the Houston Rockets was matched only by her love of food and cooking. Her kitchen was filled with the comforting aromas of her delicious meals and baked goods.

Edith accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior as a young woman. In September 2014, she united with Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church under the leadership of Senior Pastor, Dr. Marcus D. Cosby. She was a part of Family Group 30 and the Seasoned Saints Ministry. Edith worshipped faithfully and remained devoted to her church community until her health no longer allowed her to attend in person. Edith was strong, independent, and deeply devoted to her family. She was known for her protective nature, her generosity, and her remarkable talent in the kitchen. She was celebrated as the family’s favorite cook—famous for her gumbo, greens, and fried fish—and her strawberry pie was a family favorite.

Edith was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George Davis; her parents; and her siblings: Phil Grimes, James Clayton Grimes, Jr. (Eva, deceased), Charles Grimes (Freya), Jean Grimes, and Minnie Grimes Morgan (I.V. Morgan, deceased).

Edith leaves to cherish her memory: her brother, Ed Grimes (Jean); sons, Gary (Jackie, deceased) and Kenwick (Leah); grandchildren, Kristine Rhodes, Rhonda Rhodes, Kristopher Gaines, Kyle Gaines, and Dylan Gaines; great-grandchildren, Faith Magness and Dakota Magness; and nieces and nephews, Charlotte Grimes, Marcus Grimes (Sheila), Renee Brown (Alex), Chondra Grimes, Yolanda Brown (Jerry), Erin Grimes, Janine Grimes, and a host of great-nieces and great-nephews.

Edith loved her family and cherished every moment spent with her sons, grandsons, siblings, nieces, and nephews. Her family takes comfort in knowing that she is at peace and free from pain. Edith will be deeply missed and forever remembered with love.
