Shawn'te C.R. Harvell, affectionately known as Shawn, hails from Newark, New Jersey, but his roots run deep in Bound Brook, where he was raised. As the second child of Barbara and Darnell, Shawn's upbringing instilled in him a commitment to community and service. He is a proud graduate of the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service and The State University of New York-Canton, earning his credentials as a Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer in both New Jersey and New York.

Shawn’s journey in the funeral industry began with over 13 years as the Assistant Manager at McCall’s Bronxwood Funeral Home, Inc. in the Bronx, New York. This role laid the groundwork for his current venture: House of Harvell Mortuary Enterprises. Under its umbrella, he operates Smith Funeral Home and Cremations in Elizabeth, New Jersey, as well as Legacy Funeral Service, a consulting firm dedicated to assisting funeral homes across the tri-state area. His commitment to supporting families during their most challenging moments is at the core of his work, exemplified by his guiding principle: “You have to be serious about business if you’re going to be in business.” This dedication has positioned him as one of the leading and most innovative funeral professionals in the country.

Shawn's relentless pursuit of excellence has not gone unnoticed. His high standards and exceptional craftsmanship have made him a sought-after funeral director and embalmer throughout New York, New Jersey, and beyond. His passion for education in funeral service shines through in his contributions to reputable publications, including articles in Scope and Nomis Publications. Notably, he was featured on the cover of the New York Times during Science week in a compelling article titled "The Fading Art of Preserving the Dead," which addresses the evolving landscape of funeral services.

Beyond his professional commitments, Shawn shares his knowledge as an adjunct professor at Eastwick College in Hackensack and Mercer County Community College in New Jersey. Here, he brings his passion for Mortuary Science to life, teaching courses that prepare the next generation of funeral service professionals.

In 2015, Shawn earned his Certified Funeral Service Practitioner designation from the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice. Currently, he serves as the 69th National President of the National Funeral Directors and Morticians Association, Inc., while also leading the Essex Union & West Hudson County Funeral Directors Association. His influence extends to the Board of Trustees for the New Jersey Funeral Service Education Corporation, New Jersey State Funeral Directors Association, New York State Funeral Directors Association, and the National Funeral Directors Association.

Shawn is also an active member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and the Clifford Alford Lodge #165 International F&AMM. He is dedicated to his faith, serving as Co-Minister of Music at Paradise Baptist Church in Newark. Above all his professional achievements, Shawn considers himself blessed to be the proud father of two beautiful daughters, Madison and Mylea, who inspire him daily. His remarkable journey is a testament to his unwavering commitment to service, education, and family.
